Medeco High Security Commercial Lock Change: Maxum Deadbolt and Keyed-Alike Cylinders, Dania Beach
A new business owner in Dania Beach emailed me about putting Medeco locks on his doors. The place will soon be a sandwich bar. As his commercial locksmith, I assessed all three doors, ordered Medeco high security locks keyed alike from the manufacturer, and did the lock change in two hours of labor.
What the email said
He wrote, “I moved into a new place in Dania Beach and I would like to have Medeco locks on my doors.”
Why Medeco high security locks have to be ordered
I can’t rekey a Medeco or cut keys for these locks. Only designated suppliers can. So before I could install anything, I had to order the locks from the manufacturer, keyed alike, so one key would open every door.
What I found at the first visit
I went there first to assess what materials were needed. There were three doors.
The storefront door has a mortise lock, and the cylinder size was 1¼ inches.
On the door between the shopping area and the workers’ area, I also had to change the handle. I chose a Marks USA 195AB commercial lever set, Grade 1, with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and a separate Medeco KIK cylinder for it, so it matches the other locks.
The third door goes to the employee break room. It had two locks: a lever with no key cylinder, which means it can’t be locked, and a deadbolt. The owner asked me to replace the deadbolt with a Medeco as well, so I picked the Medeco Maxum deadbolt, model 11JC604, a Grade 1 commercial lock. In my opinion, it’s top of the line.
The owner wanted 4 keys in total for all 3 locks.
The installation
Three days after the locks arrived at my office, I went back to do the lock change. It went smoothly, and everything fit perfectly. I gave the owner the keys and the Medeco key ID card. If he ever needs more copies, that card will be required.
What was on the invoice
The invoice covered the Medeco cylinders, the Marks USA lever set, the Medeco Maxum deadbolt, the four keys, and two hours of labor. The owner chose Medeco, and I picked the models that fit each door. My pricing is upfront, and you approve it before I start.
What a real locksmith knows
Before a commercial lock change, I ask at the first visit if the owner needs copies, I check the mortise lock size, and I check the lever function each door needs. For the door between the shoppers and the workers, I recommended a storeroom function lever. That means the door opens only with a key or from the inside. It always locks, so the employees don’t have to remember to lock it every time it opens.
All the details I took at that first assessment are what let me finish the job quickly and professionally.
If you’re thinking of ordering high security locks like Medeco on your own as a client, they might not fit your needs. It’s better to get advice from a locksmith first.
