Exterior School Doors Stopped Closing After an HVAC Change in Aventura

Exterior School Doors Stopped Closing After an HVAC Change in Aventura

After HVAC work changed the air pressure inside an Aventura school, the exterior doors would not pull shut on their own. We replaced six closers across three double-door sets with LCN 4040XP units and set them to 8.5 lbs of opening force, the figure Florida uses for exterior doors, so they close every time without being too heavy for a kid to open.

An Aventura school had exterior doors that stopped closing right. They had not touched the doors. What changed was the HVAC, and after that work the building’s inside air pressure was pushing against the doors hard enough that the old closers could not pull them shut.

That is a real thing people miss. When a building runs at positive pressure, every exterior door is fighting that pressure on the way closed. A closer that was fine last year is suddenly underpowered, not because it broke, but because the job it has to do got harder. A door that does not latch on an exterior school opening is a security problem, not a nuisance.

We replaced all six closers on the three double-door sets with LCN 4040XP units. The 4040 is the closer specified for high-traffic openings, and it has the power to overcome that pressure. Then we adjusted each one by hand, testing the opening force at the door until it landed at 8.5 lbs, which is the figure Florida uses for exterior hinged doors. Strong enough to close and latch against the pressure, light enough that a student can still open it.

This one is less about weather and more about the building. Big Broward schools run heavy HVAC, and any air-pressure change shows up first at the exterior doors.

We install and adjust commercial door closers across Aventura and Broward, from schools to offices. See our door hardware installation page or call (954) 371-5674.

FAQ

Common Questions

Why did my doors stop closing after HVAC work?

HVAC changes can raise the building's inside air pressure, which pushes against exterior doors. Closers that were fine before can no longer pull the door shut. The fix is a stronger closer set correctly.

What closer do you use on high-traffic doors?

We use the LCN 4040 series on high-traffic openings. It is the recognized spec for schools and busy commercial doors and has the power for heavy use.

How much force should an exterior door take to open?

Florida uses 8.5 lbs for exterior hinged doors. Interior doors are lighter. We set each closer with a gauge at the door to hit the right figure.

Can a door closer be adjusted instead of replaced?

Sometimes. If the closer has the power but the speed is off, we adjust it. If it cannot overcome the door's load, it needs replacing. We check before recommending either.

My school door does not latch. Is that a real problem?

Yes. An exterior door that does not latch is a security gap. It should be fixed quickly, especially on a school.
