A school door that kids push through hundreds of times a day had a failed hinge. We installed an ABH A571HD heavy-duty full-surface geared continuous hinge, 83 inches, through-bolted per the manufacturer’s instructions. On a door that gets that much traffic, a continuous hinge is the answer that does not bring us back.

An Aventura school had a door on one of its busiest openings with a broken hinge. This is a door students go through hundreds of times a day, and standard hinges on that kind of traffic do not last. Kids shove it, kick it, hang on it, and three small butt hinges take all of that at three small points until they give.

We put in an ABH A571HD heavy-duty full-surface geared continuous hinge, 83 inches. A continuous hinge runs the full height of the door, so instead of the load landing on three spots it spreads across the whole edge. That is exactly why continuous hinges are the recognized choice for school corridors: they take the abuse and the cycle count that kill regular hinges.

We through-bolted it, which the manufacturer calls for on a heavy, high-traffic door. Through-bolts pass all the way through the door instead of biting into the surface, so the hinge is anchored against the constant pull of that much use. On a door getting hundreds of cycles a day, that is the difference between a fix and a callback.
