Access Control Systems for Commercial Doors

An access control system is not just an electronic lock. The difference between a keypad, an electric strike, or a maglock on its own and a real access control system is that the system stores data: who entered, which door, and when. It controls who is allowed through a given door and at what times. It coordinates with other building systems, so that in a fire or a power outage the maglocks and electric strikes release and nobody is trapped inside. And it runs on its own power supply, so it keeps working when the building's power does not.

That's the layer most people don't think about when they price out a keypad online. We install the hardware, but we also make sure the system behaves correctly in the situations that matter.

Some access control systems require a permit or fire department approval. For those jobs we work with a certified electrician who handles the permitting, and we work together so the installation passes inspection. We handle the consultation and the city permit process on the client's behalf.

An existing system that needs hardware replaced or repaired does not require a permit from the city, so repairs are straightforward.

We are not permitted to work on or connect directly to the fire department control box. On jobs that need that connection, we have the fire alarm contractor prepare an outlet for us, and our system plugs into it. We won't cross that line.

We always recommend UL-certified electronic hardware. It's the difference between a system that behaves predictably in an emergency and one that doesn't.

The practical advantage over keys shows up the first time someone leaves. Revoking a fob or a code takes seconds. Rekeying a building takes a day and costs real money. On a multi-door setup you can give each employee or tenant access to exactly the doors they need, and nothing else.

Systems that connect to an app or web portal also show you a history of access: who opened which door, and when. You can restrict areas by time of day, so a tenant can't get into the building gym after 10pm, but the cleaning crew and management still can.

If it's one door in a small office, you don't need an over-specified system. We'll tell you that.

But the more common mistake runs the other way. Businesses often ask us to install fewer devices to save money, and it creates a situation that costs more later. A smoke shop owner wanted his door to have no key and no keypad, released only by a button from the office, and only during system hours. We explained the problem: one employee steps outside, the door closes behind him, and now nobody can get in. He added remotes and a key.

Batteries in standalone systems should be checked and often replaced every three to six months. Some smart units will notify you before the battery is fully drained.

On any public-facing property, the system has to satisfy ADA and fire department code. We won't lead a client into a job that puts people in that building at risk. We consult an electrician before taking steps on anything code-adjacent, and we verify fire department requirements for every public place that asks for this work.
